How to Gain Followers on Twitter

Setting up a Twitter account was one of the first things I did when I launched my blog. I am so happy  I did that. In just 2 months I went from ZERO followers to over 400! Yes, all of my followers are organic. I did not pay for a single ad. Gaining organic followers on Twitter doesn’t have to be such a hard process. Twitter is one of the easier social media platforms to gain organic followers on. Here are some tips on how to can gain followers on Twitter:

Table of Contents

  • Create your own Twitter header
  • Optimize your Twitter bio
  • Tweet regularly
  • Participate in Twitter Chats
  • Conclusion

Create your own Twitter header

If you want followers on Twitter you have to let them know what you are about. One way to do this is through your Twitter header. Just uploading a generic stock photo won’t cut it. That won’t tell potential followers anything.

They want to know who you are, what you do, and how you can help them. Your Twitter header doesn’t have to be the most stylized. As long as it gets the job done it’s fine. You can always update it later. Here is an example of the one I made when I first joined Twitter:

Mine isn’t the best. Yet it helped me to get a lot of followers. If you need inspiration on how to create your Twitter header research people in your niche on Twitter. If you are food blogger look up other food bloggers on Twitter. Take a look at what they put on theirs, and how it’s styled. If you are a business owner take a look at how your competitors created theirs.

Optimize your Twitter bio

When I first started using Twitter for business I didn’t have a clue on how to present myself. I started looking up other people in my field to find out how they set up their Twitter profiles. I noticed one thing they all had in common. They optimized their Twitter bios.
Bloggers, entrepreneurs, and digital marketers who have well over 1000 followers optimize their Twitter bios. What does that mean? It means they optimize their bios for search results by using hashtags and keywords.
For example, if you run a social media management service. You can put a hashtag in your bio related to your service. Then when people search for that hashtag in Twitter your Twitter account will show up in the search results. If you are a blogger you can put #blogger etc. I put hashtags related to my field in my bio. It definitely worked for me. I got follower notifications every day.

Tweet regularly

One of the reasons people get turned off from Twitter is that it’s more work. You can’t post one tweet a day and expect to get followers. Whereas on Instagram you can post once a day and get followers. You can’t tweet every other day or once a week. You have to tweet multiple times a day if you want a steady stream of followers.
Twitter isn’t like Facebook or Instagram. You can’t just post once a week or once a day on Twitter. Then expect the followers to come. You have to tweet regularly in order to grow your following on Twitter. How often you should tweet is up for debate. Tweriod is a free tool that will let you know the best times for you to tweet. I tweet at least 3 times a day.

I know that life can get in the way sometimes. Making it hard to tweet multiple times a day. I have had days like that. Personally, there are times when I am just too lazy to tweet. What I do to avoid this is I schedule out my tweets. That way I am still posting to Twitter without having to log in all the time.
The free tools I use to schedule tweets are Buffer, Tweetcaster, and Tweetdeck. You can schedule out as many tweets as you want for FREE.

Participate in Twitter Chats

What are Twitter chats? They are public conversations on Twitter around a unique hashtag. The hashtag allows you to participate and follow the conversation. They occur at specific days and times. The specific topic up for discussion is always different.
I love Twitter chats! There are so many benefits to participating in one. First, it’s a great way to establish yourself as an authority in your niche. Participating also gets your account noticed. Which increases your chances of getting new followers.
Twitter chats can help you connect with others in your niche/field. You can learn a lot of great tips, strategies, and advice too! One of my favorite Twitter chats is Twitter Smarter hosted by Madalyn Sklar.
It’s all about the best ways to use Twitter for business and marketing To find one in your niche go to TweetReports.com.

Conclusion

What you put into Twitter is what you will get out of it. Gaining followers on Twitter does require more effort. But it’s worth it because it’s not a pay to play platform. Unlike Facebook where it is virtually impossible to get organic reach or likes. You can get organic followers on Twitter without paying for a single ad. I did and you can too.
