I see so many bloggers making this big mistake with their blogs. When I first started I made the same mistake. It wasn’t until I took a Pinterest course from Alma Bradford that I realized my mistake.
It’s something so simple yet many bloggers overlook it. It can affect how many shares your blog posts get. What big mistake am I talking about? I am talking about, not including a Pinterest Pin in your blog posts!
When I read or see a good blog post I always want to pin it to Pinterest. Sometimes if I don’t have time to read it I pin it so I can read it later. I know many others do the same thing. If I come across a blog post that doesn’t have a Pinterest pin I usually don’t share it.
I find that its easier to pin a blog post to Pinterest than it is to share it to Facebook or Twitter. I know many others feel the same way. By not having a Pinterest pin in your blog posts you are missing out on a huge traffic source!

What is a Pinterest Pin?
A Pinterest pin is a vertical pinnable image with a 2:3 aspect ratio. The minimum width and height
of pins are 600 x 900. The maximum width and height are 600 x 1200.
Not every image in your blog should be pinned to Pinterest. Technically horizontal images can be pinned to Pinterest. But if you want a truly pinnable image in your blog posts it has to be vertical. It definitely has to be an image/graphic. Not flash animations.
According to Gimme Some Oven vertical images perform much better on Pinterest than horizontal or square images.
Why You Need a Pinterest Pin in Your Blog Posts
If that isn’t enough to convince you let me show you some examples from other bloggers. Elna from Twins Mommy wrote a blog post all about Pinterest and how to use for your blog.
Her blog post got 309 shares to Pinterest, 23 shares to Facebook, and only 3 shares to Twitter. Notice how most of her social media shares were to Pinterest?
If you would like to learn more about Pinterest and how to use it as a blogger I definitely recommend reading her blog post.
Another example is from Jelena from the blog BOB for Her. She wrote a blog about affiliate marketing. Her blog post got 516 shares to Pinterest!
Notice how both blog posts included a Pinterest pin. Including a Pinterest pin in your blog post will help drive traffic to your blog. A pin will increase the number of shares your blog post receives. I always make sure to include at least 1 pin in every blog post.
I wrote a blog post about How to Promote Your Affiliate Links without a Blog. I got 69 shares to Pinterest.
In that blog post, I hid all of my pins. That’s why it looks like I don’t have any in there. I hid them because I added more than 1 pin. I didn’t want my post to look spammy.
The mistake I made back then was hiding all of them. I realized that in order to get more shares to Pinterest you need to have at least 1 visible pin.
Now I have at least 1 visible pin in each post. Since I started doing that my organic reach on Pinterest has increased. If I want to add more I hide those ones. That way my posts don’t look spammy.

How to Create a Pin
Once I started seeing people use the templates as me it turned me off. I also noticed I wasn’t getting a lot of clicks. I wanted unique click-worthy pins. That’s when I started using pin templates created by other bloggers, and graphic designers.
It made a world of difference. I started getting more clicks and repins. I also learned more about pin design. That way I could take the templates I received and make them my own.
If you want to learn more about creating pins I recommend the FREE 5-days to Better Pins Challenge from Kyla @Dishitoutsocial.com!You’ll learn how to create click-worthy pins that drive traffic to your blog!

Where to Place Your Pins
- After your intro paragraph
- To the right of your intro paragraph
- At the end of your blog post
- In the middle of your blog post
- At the very beginning of your blog post
What I see bloggers doing a lot is placing them to the right of their intro paragraph. I also see them put at the beginning of the post. Many bloggers do this as a way of making the pin the main blog image. There’s nothing wrong with it. If this sounds like something you want to try then go for it!
I don’t put my pins to the right of my paragraphs anymore. I stopped because I didn’t want to interrupt the flow of the text.
Conclusion
Including a Pinterest pin in every blog post is key to driving traffic to your blog. Don’t make the mistake that I see so many bloggers make. By not including a pin you are missing out on a huge source of traffic.
