What is a tag on Etsy?
Tags on Etsy are basically the words that Etsy shoppers put into the search bar to find Etsy products. These are basically keywords that Etsy uses to rank and categorize your items.
Are tags important on Etsy?
If you want your item to be found in Etsy search results then you need to use tags. Without tags it will be hard for Etsy to know what you sell, and hard for people to find your products.
But you can’t just use any tags. You need to use Etsy tags that sell. I recommend this tool to find the right Etsy tags to use. To receive a discount use promo code: helpfulonlinemarketer.
How many Etsy tags do I need in each listing?
You need at least 13 tags. Etsy has a separate section in each listing at the bottom for tags. You can enter up to 13 tags in this section. You can use these same Etsy tags in your titles and in your listing description.
Does it matter what order my tags are in?
Yes, it does. The tags that you want to rank for need to be first. The ones that you can rank for need to be first in the title, in your description, and first in your tag section. All the other ones need to be last. If you find some tags that describe your item but are highly competitive, put those last.
Should I use the same tag for all of my listings?
My answer is to use the same Etsy tag for some of your listings. I know that many experts say no. If you find a low competition tag with a good search volume it’s okay to use that same tag for some of your listings. But not all of them.
The reason is that Etsy won’t show all of your listings for that tag. It will show some of them. I think at least 2-4. I’ve tested this myself in my own Etsy shop. You want to find tags that describe your unique items. Not all of your items will be the same.
Use different tags to reach different people. I recommend using Sale Samurai to find your Etsy tags. Use promo code: helpfulonlinemarketer at checkout to get 20%!

How to find the best Etsy tags using Sale Samurai
You can watch the video above to see how you can find the best keywords for Etsy. I use an Etsy keyword tool called Sale Samurai to find the best Etsy tags.
What I love about it is that it gives you Etsy tag ideas, search volume, competition, you can even use it to spy on your competition, and more.
In order to find the best Etsy tags to use you need to look at the search volume and competition of that word. In order to find that data, you need to use a tool like Sale Samurai. Etsy won’t give you this data. Search volume will tell you how many Etsy users are looking for that word.
Competition tells you how many of your competitors are also using that Etsy tag. The kind of Etsy tags you want to use are the ones with low competition and good search volume. It’s not always easy to find them. Sometimes you’ll be lucky if you can find one.
To see how I do it using Sale Samurai watch the video above. You can use promo code: helpfulonlinemarketer to get 20% off of Sale Samurai. I also love that Sale Samurai has a Chrome extension! I will show you how it works in the video.
Where do I put my tags in my Etsy listings?
First, you’re going to put them in your title as displayed above. The ones you want to rank for will be first.
Then you’re going to put them in the description.
Finally, you’re going to put them at the bottom where it says tags. Here you’re going to put 13 tags. Like I said before, the ones you want to rank for put in first. What I don’t like is how Etsy limits you to 20 characters per tag. So, you’ll have to get a little creative.
Like I said before Sale Samurai makes it super easy to find the best tags to use on Etsy. Especially when you download the Chrome extension. Use promo code: helpfulonlinemarketer to get 20% off.
Additional Etsy Tag Tips
Don’t make the mistake I made when I first started on Etsy. I made the mistake of only using low-competition Etsy keywords/tags. The problem is that I didn’t take search volume into consideration. Search volume and competition are important.
It doesn’t matter if the tag you’re using on Etsy has little competition if no one is searching for it. That’s why certain items sell better than others. It’s all about what customers are searching for. Start thinking as they do.
Don’t use industry jargon for Etsy tags. Like typography for example. The regular shopper doesn’t know what that means. You can use Sale Samurai to get tons of Etsy tag ideas.
